Hands off our Homes: Template Letter to Councillors

Councillors have told us that they want to hear directly from residents about the proposed closure to Glen Lee and Holcroft House.

With this in mind, we’ve created a template letter for you to use. You can find out who your councillor is, and how to contact them, here.

Dear [Name of Councillor]

Proposed closures of Glen Lee and Holcroft House

I am writing to you to express my deep dissatisfaction with the proposal to close the two remaining Council-run residential dementia care homes.

As a resident of Southampton I disagree with the proposal to close both Glen Lee and Holcroft House. I recognise the damage that this will cause to the wellbeing of current residents, the loss of employment and importance of affordable and ethical care provision in the City. I am in full support of the Trade Unions’ and Labour Party’s campaign to oppose these proposals and come up with alternative options that keep public funds in Local Government to give stability to public services.

I can see that these proposals will disproportionately impact on women. It is mainly women who are employed at these homes and it is women who still fulfil care responsibilities on an unpaid and informal basis for their friends and relatives.

Closing the last two Council-owned residential care homes and stating that the private sector and charities can provide the same care in a more cost-effective way proves that little has been learned from the contract the Council entered into with Capita and recently gave notice on. Please do what you can to review and revoke the formal consultation and do not commence the process of closing these homes and consider alternative proposals, help the homes manage their costs and invest in a valuable community asset.

Please do what you can to call in a review of these proposals and listen to your local Trade Unions, Labour Party members, residents’ families and the voice of the local community.

I hope to hear from you soon with a positive response and outcome.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name]
